the object of pictures
21 September – 15 October 2005
My enduring interest is space. Space is our world, what
surrounds us, what constitutes our material bodies. Our concepts of space
reflect the myriad of different ways in which our world can be conceived.
Historically, different depictions of space reflected world views and
individual interpretations of those views.
I explore methods for conjuring up new spaces from old. I draw intuitively
to create different types of space and use these images, and others gleaned
from nature and previously created art, to construct new spaces in digital
format. I then transfer the resulting constructions to canvas using conventional
processes.
Since space underpins my painting, it does not matter what the subject
is. Figurative or abstract works can contribute to the exploration. I
have spent thirty years switching periodically between figurative and
abstract forms and find them equally interesting.
I hope that my paintings can provide a substrate in which a viewer’s
imagination can be stimulated to question and better understand their
situation in the world.
